What Do You Need for JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced at a Glance
JEE Advanced is the entrance examination for undergraduate programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Seats are allotted through JoSAA counselling.
Based on JEE Advanced 2026. The IITs may change details each year — always confirm in the current information brochure on jeeadv.ac.in.
Who Is Eligible for JEE Advanced?
A candidate must meet all five conditions.
1. Performance in JEE Main
Be among the top ~2.5 lakh successful candidates (all categories) in JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech).
2. Age limit
For 2026: born on or after 1 October 2001, with 5 years’ relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
3. Number of attempts
At most two attempts, in two consecutive years.
4. Class 12 year
For 2026: Class 12 passed (first time, with Physics, Chemistry and Maths) in 2025 or 2026.
5. No earlier IIT admission
Candidates who have already joined an IIT programme are not eligible, even if they left later.
Summary only. The exact wording, exceptions and the next year’s dates are in the official brochure on jeeadv.ac.in.

JEE Advanced FAQs
Who conducts JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced is conducted by the IITs under the Joint Admission Board. The organising IIT changes every year (JEE Advanced 2026 was organised by IIT Roorkee). Official information is published on jeeadv.ac.in.
Who can appear for JEE Advanced?
Only the top performers in JEE Main Paper 1 — about 2.5 lakh candidates across all categories in recent years — can register. Candidates must also meet the age, attempts and Class 12 conditions in the current brochure.
How many attempts are allowed?
A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced at most twice, in two consecutive years: the year of passing Class 12 and the year after.
Is there negative marking?
Some question types carry negative marks and some do not, and the marking scheme changes from year to year. The exact scheme is given in the instructions on the exam screen — practise with past papers to get used to the variations.
Does my JEE Main score count in JEE Advanced?
No. JEE Main decides who is eligible to appear. IIT admission ranks are based only on JEE Advanced performance, together with the Class 12 eligibility condition.
What Class 12 marks are needed for IITs?
For IIT admission through JoSAA, candidates generally need at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD), or to be in the top 20 percentile of their board.
What is the AAT?
The Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) is a separate test for candidates who want B.Arch admission at the IITs that offer it. Only candidates who have qualified JEE Advanced can take it.
