JEE Main FAQs

Who conducts JEE Main?

JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). All official notices, the information bulletin, registration, admit cards and results are published on jeemain.nta.nic.in.

How many times is JEE Main held in a year?

JEE Main is held in two sessions, usually in January and April. You can appear in one or both sessions; your better NTA score is used for the ranking.

Is there negative marking?

Yes. Each correct answer carries +4 marks and each incorrect multiple-choice answer carries −1 mark. Unanswered questions carry 0. Check the current information bulletin for the exact rule on numerical-value questions.

Is there an age limit?

NTA has not set an upper age limit for JEE Main in recent years, but candidates must meet the Class 12 year-of-passing condition in the current bulletin. Institutes may have their own requirements.

What is the 75% criterion?

For admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes through JoSAA, candidates generally need at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST), or to be in the top 20 percentile of their board. This applies to admission, not to appearing in JEE Main.

How is JEE Main linked to JEE Advanced?

Top performers in JEE Main Paper 1 become eligible to appear for JEE Advanced, which is the entrance exam for the IITs. The number of qualifying candidates is announced each year.
