GRE General Test Format
The essay comes first. Verbal and Quant are section-adaptive: how you do in the first section sets the difficulty of the second.
| Section | Qs | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Analytical Writing — 1 essay | 1 task | 30 min |
| Verbal Reasoning — 2 sections | 12 + 15 | 18 + 23 min |
| Quantitative Reasoning — 2 sections | 12 + 15 | 21 + 26 min |
| Total | 55 | 1 h 58 min |
There is no unscored research section and no scheduled break. You can move back and forth within a section.
